  1. • What is AppTree?
  2. ----------------- 
  3. The AppTree is a simple application that searches all the applications available on mounted volumes and builds up a hierarchical menu. You can directly launch any application on your hard disk(s) from AppTree's hierarchical menu.  You can include application aliases in the menu if you use System 7. You may find that AppTree is more useful under multi-finder environment and/or as a start-up application.

  5. • How to use
  6. -------------
  7. AppTree read data from a file named 'AppTree Pref' in the system folder(or in the Preferences folder if you use system 7).  If there is not 'AppTree Pref' file, AppTree creates it and searches all the mounted volumes to set up the AppTree menu data. It may take some time at first, but after saving the AppTree menu data, AppTree read the data from 'AppTree Pref' file to set up the menus quickly.

  10. ----------------
  11. 1. Reset Menu Bar: resets the menu bar and leaves AppTree menu only.
  12. 2. Update Data: destroys current menu data and builds new one by scanning volumes.
  13. 3. Preference...: set up configuration.
  14. 4. Save Current Data...: saves current AppTree menu data in 'AppTree Pref' file.
  15. 5. Favorite: stores your favorite applications for quicker launching.

  17. • Preferences 
  18. -------------
  19. 1. Include System Folder: scans the system folder if checked.
  20. 2. Include Application Aliases: includes application aliases in the menu if checked.
  21. 3. Save Current Menus Data: saves current menu data if checked.
  22. 4. Keep Menu Bar Menus: saves the menus displayed in the menu bar if checked.
  23. 5. Maximum # of Menus in Menu Bar: sets the maximum # of menus in menu bar.

  25. • Useful Hints
  26. --------------
  27. The shift-key plays an important role in AppTree. If you are pressing the shift-key while clicking on a menu item or a menu name, the appearance of menu changes.
  28. 1. Shift-clicking on a menu item which has a sub menu brings the sub menu to the menu bar.
  29. 2. Shift-clicking on a menu name on the menu bar brings the menu to sub menu tree.
  30. 3. Shift-clicking on an menu item will add the chosen application into the 'Favorite' menu item list.
  31. 4. Shift-clicking on a menu item in the 'Favorite' menu will delete the application from the 'Favor' menu item list.
  32. 5. Build up your favorite application list in the 'Favorite' menu and menus in the menu bar, and save them for later use.
  33. 6. Current appearance of the menu bar can be saved by choosing 'Save Data' in AppTree menu.
  34. 7. If the file structure has been changed, you may need to update the menu data by choosing 'Update Data' in AppTree menu.

  36. • Error Handling and Limitations
  37. -------------------------------
  38. 1. If AppTree is frozen up during updating menu data, it may be fixed by increasing its memory allocation in the Finder( usually 150K will be enough in most cases).
  39. 2. If AppTree works improperly, delete 'AppTree Pref' in the system folder(or Preferences folder under system 7) and start again.
  40. 3. AppTree v0.90 is System7-compatible but not System7-savvy. Future version would be much improved by implementing system 7's features.
  41. 4. AppTree has been tested under system 7 and 6.07 on IIsi, but should be compatible with older system and other Mac which has 128K ROM or better.
